På torsdag och fredag ska jag delta på Europaparlamentets Citizens Agora. EU har fattat att dialogen med dess medborgare inte fungerar tillräckligt bra, och försöker nu på olika sätt stärka den dialogen. Citizens agora är ett av detta sätt, där medborgare samlas relativt regelbundet för att diskutera olika viktiga frågor.
Dock är det inte direkt ”medborgare” som deltar, utan istället är det mest representanter för olika organisationer. Jag representerar via LSU – Sveriges ungdomsorganisationer.
Europaparlamentet är medveten om problemen, och skriver såhär om saken:
Because it is directly elected, Parliament is the European Union institution best qualified to take up the challenge of keeping open the channels of communication with European Union citizens. Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) are in regular contact with citizens and are directly accountable to voters. (Yeah right)
All European Union institutions of course understand the importance of dialogue with citizens as part of the European Union project. Nevertheless, their responses were essentially to do with the debate on Europe’s institutional architecture. Although this issue is vital, it is also important to focus on the day-to-day concerns of ordinary people.
The European Parliament therefore now proposes involving citizens in a permanent dialogue on the European Union’s future.
Revitalising European integration requires a strong link with European Union citizens. It is not enough to tell people that Europe is being built for them – Europe needs to be built with them. Making this idea clear, and acting on it, is absolutely essential to maintaining trust.
The European Parliament wants not just to communicate with citizens, but genuinely to listen to them. Citizens, who act as protagonists, rather than just consumers, may not only transform the nature of the exercise, but also its aims.
Concerted and balanced dialogue will help ensure maximum support for the European Union project. Yet how, in practice, can a meaningful and fruitful debate be held in a Community of almost half a billion people?
Jag tycker att det är lite kul att de själva skriver att målet med det hela är stöd för EU-projektet, och inte inflytande för medborgare. Pinsamt. Det är i stunder som dessa jag verkligen avskyr EU.
Iallafall. På detta Citizens Agora är det klimatförändringarna som ska diskuteras, vilket känns spännande. När jag var på LSUs EU-utbildning i Bryssel häromveckan så fick vi en ordentlig dragning om det nya klimat – och energipaketet, och det ska bli intressant att få diskutera den genomgående.

För den som undrar om jag flyger till Bryssel eller inte, så skriver jag om den saken här.
Det är säkert jätteroligt att få känna sig viktig ibland, men har du inte en skyldighet mot GU:s medlemmar att bedriva aktivitet i Sverige i s f att sitta i meningslösa ryggdunkande paneler i Bryssel, eller hänga i NY?
Självklart, uppdelningen mellan mängden internationella konferenser och hemmaarbete varit extrem pga UN CSD i New York. Men något liknande tror jag inte jag kommer få vara med om under resten av min språkrörstid.
Så det kommer se väldigt annorlunda ut i framtiden.
